In the library we continue to add to our collection of 9,000 + books, some of which are on our daily hallway bookcase displays. They are available for borrowing, as always, without charge. In addition, all are invited to check out the free book table by the library door, where a variety of duplicate or long unread books are looking to be taken to a new home. But, most of all, we continue to appreciate the ongoing encouragement you give to your children to make use of the library. We are truly off to a great start in usage in this first full week of school.

Library Notes
As this school year ends and we make our last newsletter submission, we say “Thank You” for the help all have given this year to the reading sojourn of our students. From this librarian’s perspective, that support has been broad: from encouraging your students’ reading adventures and donating books to the library, making our annual Book Fair a beneficial event, and, of course, getting borrowed books returned. Naturally, as I look forward to inventorying our library collection this summer, I make the usual request for the return of all borrowed books. One last reminder Notice of Books Due will be individually provided, with thanks as SBS Librarian that the books were borrowed in the first place! Enjoy your summer!

May 25 News – Memorial Day Holiday, and MORE

Fall Festival Booth Chairperson Meeting
It’s never too early to start preparations for our Fall Festival! We’re having a booth chairperson meeting on Thursday, May 26th, in the 8th grade classroom, at 7:00 pm. This meeting is mandatory for all returning booth chairpersons. We have many openings for new booth chairpersons. Come get information and get involved. Being a booth chairperson is an excellent way to earn your school service hours early in the school year. Booth chairpersons are a valuable part of the team and have a huge impact on our festival’s success. This meeting is a great opportunity to learn more about being a booth chairperson. There will be pizza and soda for all who attend the meeting. Hope to see you there!

No School
There will be no school on Monday, May 30th, in observance of Memorial Day.
Enjoy the long weekend!

May Crowning
We are requesting that students bring flowers for our May Crowning next Tuesday, May 31st.

Library Notes
Won’t leave you wondering….Once again your SBS librarian is requesting family support for the Return of Overdue Books borrowed by their students. Of course, I have mixed feelings as the school year draws to a close, worrying if all the borrowed books will be returned (hopefully by June 2nd), while always happy that students are exercising their minds by borrowing books in the first place. For now though, beyond this newsletter notice, we’ll be doing verbal reminders and individual notes to the borrowers. As always, we remain grateful to your aid.

Library Notes
“Life has it’s challenges” is a saying that we would all probably endorse. Clearly, in this era of electronic technology with all these so-called “smart” devices at our disposal, we in a small school library would face the challenge of promoting the reading adventure via the book. However, having just attended a gathering of children’s literature aficionados, we learned that many K-8 schools continue to lack a fully functioning library and a librarian. Reliance is on teachers’ classroom collections. However at our school, because of the ongoing support of SBS families and faculty/staff leadership, we can gratefully celebrate that most of our students are making welcome use of both of these available avenues of reading adventure.

Library Notes
It may not yet be Thanksgiving, but with this week’s thoughts comes my thanks for whatever you do to encourage your student’s reading. As you would expect, the Librarian’s raison d’etre is about addressing the reading interests of our SBS community. At the same time, as parents or guardians, we all share that goal as a vital aspect of our children’s learning growth. And, for most of us that journey begins with the shared experience of reading to our children and then setting the early independent example of having shared visits to a library. Clearly, such efforts are promoting both adventure of the mind and launching discovery of the world that exists beyond our immediate reality. Please know, as SBS librarian, that I remain ever grateful for the ongoing support of your student’s use of our school library.

Supplements will be available the following month. Please notify the Yearbook Committee with changes to your contact information which you provided on your order form. Deadline to order is May 13th.

Library Notes
May 1st marks the start of the annual National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, which highlights the importance of healthy lifestyles. For this librarian, this means being attentive to one’s wellness of body, mind, and spirit. While physical activity is clearly nourished by our sunny days, we note the following quote: “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”( Fyi, Richard Steele or Joseph Addison notably penned this thought in their March 1710 English publication, true testament to the longevity of a good idea.) Thus, being so inspired, look for our library hallway display to provide a sample of some books with pertinent nourishment.

The last parent meeting for this year is tonight at 7:00 pm in the school hall. There will be a speaker addressing the topic of how to help your child become a lifelong learner.

Library Notes
Springtime invites all to enjoy the outdoors, with the warmth of the sun and invigorating breeze. And yet, a book travels indoors and out, as we are engaged by plot and characters to venture with our imagination. Even a most playfully active child can find enjoyment in the mental movement inspired by an interesting book, be it in the home or under a shade tree. Discovery of such a reading adventure is encouraged through a regular charge-free visit to the SBS Library. Our community has a standing invitation for such an exploration, whatever the season.
